This book has three objectives. First, it uses a number of disciplines to explain how human and ecological processes interact to affect ecosystem functions and species persistence in the landscape of North and South America. Secondly, it looks at the effects of diverse disruptive agents, especially landscape fragmentation, on different ecosystems within the Americas. Lastly, it provides an overview of the current theory, methods and approaches used in the analysis of ecosystem disruptions and fragmentation. The Americas have been chosen because North and South American landscapes mirror parallel trajectories of social and economic history, and are influenced by similar large-scale climatic drivers such as ESNO. |
