General packet radio services (GPRS) is an evolution of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), allowing data transmission in packet mode and providing higher throughputs as compared with the circuit-switching mode. Here, the authors describe the GSM and GPRS systems, devoting whole chapters to the RF physical and RLC/MAC layers, signalling and data transfer over the Gb interface, signalling related to mobility aspects and external packet network access, and the user plane between the MS and external data packet network. Case studies are included throughout. |
