Irradiation as a quarantine treatment of fresh fruit and vegetables and as a method to ensure the hygienic quality of food of animal origin is increasingly accepted and applied; international trade in irradiated food is growing. The effectiveness of food processing by ionising radiation depends on the proper delivery of the absorbed dose and its reliable measurement. For food destined for international trade, it is important that the dosimetry techniques use for dose determination are carried out accurately and that the process is monitored according to accepted procedures. This technical report defines the role of radiation dosimetry in food irradiation processing and describes how it should accomplish this role. |
