Review: This is a special issue of the journal Oil and Gas Science and Technology (in both English and French), comprising thirteen of the papers given at the conference on geomechanics organised by the IFP in December 2001. Geomechanics plays a significant role in solving problems such as wellbore stability, hydraulic fracturing and subsidence. The conference addressed four themes: case studies; numerical methods; reservoir management; and well modelling. The case studies cover a broad range of reservoirs with different geological and geomechanical characteristics. The numerical methods are designed to represent the couplings between the stress and flow in porous media.
