Review: The importance of groundwater in an increasingly-populated world is increasing. The protection and wise use of aquifers would significantly contribute to the improvement of human life and aquatic ecosystems. This book is the result of an ad hoc meeting, the Workshop on Intensively Exploited Aquifers, held in Madrid in December 2001. The authors, from thirteen countries and five continents, stress the advantages for society, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, derived from the intensive use of aquifers. A detailed study of the problems resulting from an uncontrolled and unplanned intensive exploitation of the resource has also been considered, and possible solutions are put forward. The papers are divided into five sections: general considerations; technical issues; socio-economic issues; regional and national issues; and common issues and the way forward.
