Review: This book discusses the potential of the latest optical microscopes for materials science research. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is for beginners to either microscopy or the computer processing of images: it discusses the fundamental ideas and gives a brief description of the development of electronics that gave rise to microprocessors. The second part considers two of the most important techniques for optical studies of materials: the 3D optical reflection microscope technique, and the confocal scanning laser microscope. The last part illustrates other experimental techniques in materials science: alternative optical and EM techniques; and acoustical methods.
