Review: This well-illustrated book focuses on the city hall and takes a chronological journey from Finland and North America in the 1960s, through forty-five projects, to the San Jose Civic Centre, which is projected for 2004. The examples shown all illustrate the quality of exhuberence and playfulness. The internal and external spaces of each project are illustrated and the purpose and strategies are described. Legislative buildings, such as the Reichstag (1999) and the European Parliament building (1999) are also included, as are some symbolically public buildings, such as the Berlin Chancellery (2001) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (1999).
