This is the latest in the IOP series in high-energy physics, cosmology and gravitation. Qualitatively, a brane is a state of string theory that corresponds to an extended solitonic configuration in string theory. This book brings together some of the contents of a course held in Spring 2001 in Italy on the geometry and physics of branes. The main topic was the concept of the brane in string theory, from both physical and mathematical points of view. The papers include: an elementary introduction to branes in string theory; physical aspects; and mathematical developments. |
