This is an introductory textbook, translated from French, on the geology of sedimentary basins and petroleum exploration for students on geology and geophysics, drillers, producers and economists. The first chapter describes the basics of dynamic geology and the driving forces behind it. Successive chapters go on to lay out the general framework of sedimentary geology, describe the deposition mechanism and sedimentary environments, and to look at oceanic environments and the variety of deposit tracks found there. In the next couple of chapters the history of environmental variations and the phenomena that affected sediments in the course of their history are examined. The last chapter gives the basic elements of petroleum systems: sedimentation of organic matter, kerogens, parent rock, the genesis of hydrocarbons, migrations towards reservoirs, capping and closure of fields. |
