Review: This undergraduate textbook introduces the application of design processes to a wide variety of design problems in biomedical engineering. The kind of devices to be designed include: biomedical devices (such as a modified patient brace for an individual, and a safety warning system for an intensive care unit); biomedical systems (such as patient record-keeping systems, and development of a surgical tool for a specific surgical use); and biomedical processes (such as a study of patient flow in an emergency room, and a determination of clinic space and facility needs). The authors describe the fundamental tools needed for design, and follow the design process through. Specific design topics include: CAD, human factor issues, industrial design, materials selection, and safety engineering. Quality control, prototyping, US product standards, patenting, testing, and product liability are also included.
