Holography has come a long way since its discovery by Gabor in 1947, when some called it a solution in search of a problem. This book gives a review of the major areas of holography and some views on the direction in which it is going. This is followed by two chapters on display holography, looking at colour holography and 3D displays. Some special modalities and methods are described, such as edge-lit holograms, subwavelength diffractive optical elements, coherence-gated holograms and the sculpting of 3D light fields by iterative optimisation. There are chapters on applications such as: solar holography, holographic optical memories, speckle techniques in NDT, diffuser display screens, nonspatial filtering for laser beams, particle holograms, and holographic antireflection coatings. The last chapters deal with the relationships between holography and quantum mechanics. |
