Review: This book concentrates on environmentally-friendly building construction, with emphasis on animal, plant and human health; the preservation of environmental factors, such as soil fertility and the use of space and ‘brown’ building sites; and the general quality of life. It looks at climate change, eutrophication; and water, soil and air contamination by radioactive, genetically modified and toxic substances. Nine environmental tests for evaluating construction materials are set out and methods of minimising any negative impact, while controlling costs and taking account of performance are described. There are chapters devoted to the reuse of construction materials, such as stone, concrete, metals, wood and glass; to the analysis of water and energy (oil, gas/electricity) flow; and to providing sustainable road and housing construction. The national sets of environmental criteria set out by the Dutch government are given.
