Review: Since the last book, in 1989, enormous progress has been made in the development and manufacturing of LiNbO3. This book takes in the new developments. LiNbO3 has long been used to make signal processing chips for TVs and video cassette recorders. Since then enormous steps have been made in growing high quality optical grade lithium niobate material by a small number of crystal growth centres. Waveguide devices such as high-speed optical moderators have been extensively used in advanced long-distance waveguide division multiplex telecommunication systems and are discussed in detail in the book. Such high-speed optical modulators are now being used in metro DWDM systems. Other uses of lithium niobate in optical dispersion compensators, optical waveform converters and optical parametric amplifiers using periodically poled lithium niobate proton exchanged waveguides are currently being engineered in a number of companies. This book looks at the structure, growth, mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and acoustic properties of LiNbO3. It also describes basic processing techniques, rare-earth doping, and special effects.
