Review: This eclectic book looks at light and dark from the points of view of the astronomer, zoologist, historian, artist and physicist. It is intended to provide entertainment as well as enlightenment. The chapters on the Sun and Moon look at astronomical cycles as the basis of the formation of the calendar. They go on to explains the biology of vision: colour vision in animals, the colour of animals’ coats, cephalopods, and insects and fish with bioluminescence. Light is also used for communications, as discussed in the cases of semaphore, and light in the era of electronics. Today’s optical communications by waveguides, optical fibres, amongst others are also included.
