The astronomer Jim Kaler, from Illinois University, picks a selection of 100 of his favourite stars. They include an enormous variety of sizes, temperatures, ages, and brightness’s: from The Black Widow, which spins 640 times per second, to Barnard’s Star which travels at 90 km/s, from tiny neutron stars like Geminga, which is 30 km across to VV Cephei, which is almost as large as the orbit of Saturn. Each of them is introduced by a short summary that gives the star’s name, resident constellation, apparent brightness as viewed from Earth, distance, visual luminosity, and its significance and is accompanied by a photograph or illustration. The stars are arranged alphabetically Acrux to ZZ ceti |
