These are selected papers from the meeting held in Ahmedabad, India in 1997 plus additional invited papers. The main focus is the management of water conflict and its implications for peace. Water is important in global economic development. Currently there is a severe shortage of drinking water and global water consumption has increased tenfold in the last century due to the demands of an increasing population. The first part of the book looks at the implications and resolutions of water resource management issues, especially in the Middle East, China, Israel and the Nile valley. The second part discusses cooperative opportunities and emerging challenges for water management – in areas such as the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin, Nepal, East Asia, the British Columbia Gulf Islands, and the Bengal delta plain. |
