Review: Over the last 40 years, numerous artificial materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) have been used, often for implantable devices, to repair diseased or traumatised parts of the body. The major emphasis of this book is on the chemistry of these materials. The book begins with the surgical use of biomaterials for various implants and goes on to look at the polymers, ceramics and metals used in detail. Dental materials have special treatment, as they are often elaborate hybrids that cannot easily be classified; often materials used in dentistry find uses in other parts of the body. Body responses and safety as well as tissue engineering are also covered.
