Review: This textbook on non-destructive evaluation is for undergraduate engineering students. NDE is becoming increasingly important as the infrastructure, airliners, petrochemical and power plants etc. age and an assessment has to be made on whether to replace or repair them. Each chapter explains a method of NDE: liquid penetrant; ultrasound; magnetic particle; eddy current; acoustic emission, radiology; active thermography; microwave; and optical methods. First the authors give an overview of the method and examples of how it is used. Then they discuss the physics behind it and explain the inspection techniques and the equipment involved. Finally, they discuss current applications of the method.
