This accessible introductory text provides a background to fiber optics and its uses. It begins with charting the history of fiber optics and giving an outline of the theory behind it. The principle of ‘information transmitted through a transparent dialectric medium’ was patented as recently as 1996. The different types of fiber that are available are described (single mode, multimode, step index, graded index, glass or plastic etc.) as well as their their methods of manufacture. Then optoelectronic transmitters that are used to convert electrical signals to optical energy and electrical receivers are described. An overview is given of how optical fibres are used in telecommunication networks and how it is installed and tested. Finally, new and potential future developments are discussed, and an indication is given of how the government, military and industry are making increasing use of optical fibres. |
