Calcium carbonate can be found in many forms: chalk, limestone and marble being the most well known. It can be used for many purposes – for sculptures, as slurry in papermaking, in plastics, for surface coatings, and in agriculture. This book covers the origins of calcium carbonate and its physical characteristics. It looks at its distribution on the Earth’s surface, and where deposits are to be found. Chalk, marble and limestone have their own histories, and the authors look at how man has used them throughout the ages. The book describes the modern chalk industry and the beginning of large-scale quarrying. There are chapters on its uses, such as in the making of glazing putty. Limestone is now mostly used for construction. But the book describes how it is used in the paper industry as a fillers or coating. Its use in plastics to change the properties of the material is also described. Finally, the author shows how versatile the mineral is and describes its use in fertilisers in agriculture. |
