At present, critical device dimensions for commercial products are already approaching 0.1 µm, a continued reduction in size presents problems in device performance, fabrication and reliability. This textbook looks at these problems, focusing on three emerging areas: telecommunications, quantum structures and the challenges and alternatives to CMOS. In particular it discusses the behaviour of heterostructure devices for communication s systems, quantum phenomena that appear in miniaturized structures and new nanoelectric device types that exploit these effects as well as the future challenges faced by the continuing miniaturization of CMOS devices and futuristic alternatives. |
