This edition of the book retains the format of the first edition, but is completely new. It provides a comprehensive coverage of both obesity and eating disorders. Many issues are common to the two areas #150; the basic psychology of hunger and satiety, and the processes that underlie weight regulation. The discovery of leptin and its contribution to the regulation of energy balance has been a notable advance, but its clinical importance is still unclear. Other areas of common interest are binge eating and body image. Cognitive-behavioural therapy is another potential link between the two fields. This new edition has more chapters on these subjects that straddle topics common to both areas. It has also expanded on the basic processes that underpin the control of eating and weight. New topics include: molecular genetics; leptin; the etiology of eating disorders; the treatment of bulimia nervosa; the social consequences of obesity; and the genetic and environmental causes and pharmacological treatment of obesity and the ever-vexing issue of weight loss. |
