These are the proceedings of the conference held in Italy in November 2000. The conference bought together scientists from different fields: astronomy, celestial mechanics, chemistry, geology, medicine, and natural sciences, as well as scholars of literature and art, to discuss EarthMoon relationships, their origins and their influence on human activities and beliefs. Topics included: the moon in 14th century frescoes in Padua; sexual satellites, moonlight and the nuptial dances of worms; lunar influence on the climate; ‘lunacy’ in mentally disturbed children; the D-CIXS x-ray spectrometer on ESA’s SMART-1 mission to the Moon; the atmosphere on the Moon; search for antimatter cosmic rays using the Moon; SMART-1, the first European Moon mission; lunar influence on the planets; the Moon and life on Earth; geochemical evidence for the close genetic relationship of the Earth and Moon; the Moon, the stars and mother’s milk; and the Moon’s influence on the human body. |
