These are the 64 papers from a meeting held in March 2002. The meeting presented the latest developments in high performance structures and materials, with emphasis on composites. Consequently there are a range of papers on topics such as design, optimisation, manufacturing and experimental results. Most of the structures described are non-conventional as their designs are based on novel concepts or materials. Both intelligent structures and high-performance structures require new materials that are able to resist specific external influences or react in a non-conventional manner that can be interpreted as intelligent. The volume also includes new papers from Japan on novel types of composites, which use natural fibres. These eco-composites, with plant fibres used for reinforcement, can be recycled in a more environmental-friendly way than conventional composites. |
