Review: These are papers from the Ernst Schering Research Foundation Workshop, which presented recent findings in the use and cultivation of stem cells and tissue transplantation. The only stem cells that have been use clinically for some time are haematopoietic stem cells, as a source of bone marrow transplantation. Recent findings indicate that haematopoietic stem cells have the ability not only to differentiate into blood cells, but also, under certain conditions, into endothelial, neural or muscle cells, providing exciting new therapeutical possibilities. The papers cover: bone marrow reconstruction; neuronal stem cells and adult neurogenisis; tissue engineering by cell transplantation; myocardial tissue engineering; cellular transplantation for the treatment of heart failure; a new approach for tissue engineering – the LOEX self-assembly technique; flat membrane bioreactor for the replacement of liver functions; and tissue engineering of genitourinary organs.
