This undergraduate textbook covers the basic results of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics that are needed by first-year chemistry students. It introduces the thermodynamic quantities and relationships and develops them to enable students to apply thermodynamical analysis to chemical problems, keeping the mathematics to a minimum. Chapters cover: the Laws of Thermodynamics; heat capacity, enthalpy and thermochemistry; free energy; phase transition; chemical equilibrium; microscopic an macroscopic properties; the partial function; an ideal gas; and statistical mechanics and equilibrium. Worked problems are included in each chapter. |
