These are papers given at the meeting in Crete in June 1999. The meeting covered a wide range of topics, including: radio pulsars and neutron stars; the neutron star-black hole connection; accretion discs; neutron stars and black holes in binaries; magnetars; gamma-ray bursts; and new experiments. It is now generally accepted that many (maybe thousands) of stellar-mass black holes lie in low-mass x-ray binary (LMXB) systems. A few are detected every year as x-ray or gamma-ray transients. Remarkably, all LMBXs display similar temporal and spectral behaviour, whether the accreting compact object is a neutron star or a black hole. A debate on the similarities and differences constituted one of the main focal points of the meeting. |
