Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are prone to developing infections. This book brings together experts in infection control, noted scientists, intensivists and epidemiologists from the USA and Europe. They discuss the most pressing and high-profile control problems in ICUs, such as Acinetobacter, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci. They give the latest information prophylactic and/or pre-emptive therapy of fungal infections in ICUs. Innovations in vascular catheter care and prevention of bloodstream infections are discussed. A review of ventilator-associated pneumonia and its prevention is provided. Finally, the latest mathematical modelling techniques for understanding the epidemiology and control of infections in ICUs are given. |
