Review: In the last decade, chemical oxidation has been developed and demonstrated as an in situ remediation approach for cleanup of contaminated sites. This book illustrates how many toxic organics are amenable to rapid and complete chemical destruction or to partial degradation as an aid to subsequent biological treatment. It introduces the topic with a review of the development and application of in situ contaminated sites and goes on to explain the principles and processes of chemical oxidation using potassium or sodium permanganate. Other chapters describe: the effects of permanganate on metals in the subsurface; its effects on subsurface conditions; oxidant delivery and subsurface distribution; the design of potassium permanganate systems for ISCO; field applications and experiences; and the current status and future developments.
