This updated textbook aims to provide students in civil and structural engineering with all the information that they need for their first two years of a 3- or 4- year course. The book begins by describing the nature of materials from a knowledge of their structure and properties. It goes on to describe different materials: metals and alloys; concrete; bituminous materials; brickwork and blockwork; polymers; and timber. It gives their structure and composition from the molecular level upwards, and the topics of deformation, strength and failure, durability, and manufacture and processing are considered. To aid the reader compare and contrast the materials, cross-references are given throughout. |
