Review: This textbook for students with a background in physics, provides an insight into contemporary cosmology. The book begins by looking at the history of the Universe, its expansion (or not), the matter contained in the Universe and the diffuse radiation from beyond our galaxy. It goes on to discuss relativity and mathematical models for the Universe and tests to verify them. The stages of the Universe, from big bang, through inflation lead to a discussion of its present structure and some general issues raised by expansion and isotropy are discussed. Each chapter ends with a problem section and essential formulae, symbols and physical constants are listed at the back of the book.
