The demand for water for drinking and other essential uses, such as hygiene and food preparation, is rising . In addition, the demand for water for food production, especially in arid and semi-arid regions, is set to greatly increase. At the same time, the paradigms of water management are shifting as the importance of ecosystem functions as life-support for the planet are increasingly taken into account. This book contains 34 of the papers from the Symposium on Regional Management of Water Resources, held in 2000 in Maastricht. The symposium was divided into three parts: the lessons learned from past management practices; sustainable regional water management when there are conflicting interests – ecology and economy, between competing water users and between competing usages of water at different stages of the hydrological cycle; and new techniques for water resource management such as modelling at different scales and for different applications. |
