Review: The contributors to this book look at the developments that are likely to occur in the near future as technological capabilities are pushed to meet the expanding market of mobile customers. They first look at the research collaboration between BT and universities taking place in the Virtual University Research Initiative on Mobility and the industry/university collaboration in the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence. The implications of increased customers numbers on a global scale are investigated, as well as the convergence of mobile and the Internet. Some of the product themes that are likely to be available with the introduction of 3G are identified – such as personalisation, immediacy and security. The authors discuss the evolution of support multimedia architecture from GSM to UMTS, voice and internet multimedia in UMTS networks, 3G service control, the OSA API and related issues; and mobile standards.
