A survey in 1997 indicated that the cost of wear in moving parts to the UK industry was of the order of £650 million per year. This guide reviews the wear mechanisms that occur in various types of industrial plant and machinery, and gives guidance on the relative wear performance of different materials that can be used for components. It also reviews the available laboratory tests for simulating practical wear conditions, to give a comparison of wear performance of potential replacement materials. Various methods of wear testing such as electron microscopy and mechanical an optical probes are discussed in detail as well as the identification of wear problems and their analysis. |
