Review: This book provides an introduction to the statistical tools that are most useful to engineers and quality improvement specialists. First it gives sufficient background material in probability and statistical theory for the reader to apply to the practical applications. The book then discusses experimental designs and emphasises the importance of statistical methods in the planning and collection of data in industrial studies; the proper data being essential to effective decision-making. The final chapters are devoted to methods for studying and reducing variability, which is the basis for quality improvement in industry. Quality improvement tools such as variance characterisation, control charts, and robust design studies are also presented.
