This book, for students and graduates with some knowledge in the principles of chemistry, shows how the principles are applied in producing the range of colours which we can see all round us. It gives a background to the physical, chemical and biological principles that allow us to perceive colours. It looks at the structure and synthesis of various dyes and pigments, as well as their applications in textiles, coatings and plastics, and, more recently, in high technology areas such as liquid crystal displays, microfilters, solar energy conversion, laser and optical data storage, and some reprographic techniques. The last chapter provides a selective account of some of the important environmental and toxicological issues associated with the manufacture and use of colour. |
