The possibility of harmful effects of electro-magnetic fields (EMF) from high-voltage power lines has been discussed since the 1970s. The concern was triggered primarily by epidemiological studies in the UK and USA that suggested a slight increase in leukemias and brain tumours occurred among those living or working near to high-voltage power lines. This book presents the results of an investigation in Japan into any possible carcinogenic effects. The editors of the book conclude that there is no evidence that the EMF found in the environment in Japan are harmful to health. The book is written as a research report. Part 1 presents the studies performed by the editors, along with reviews of related research done by other researchers. These cover the biological effects of electromagnetic fields, research on the nervous and endocrine systems, fields in the environment, and effects of power-frequency EMF on gene activities. The second part presents the toxicology studies carried out, mainly at Mitsubishi Chemical Safety Institute, with the support of Tokyo Electric Power Company. These include in vivo. and in vitro. experiments. |
