These are the proceedings of the American Society of Materials conference held in May 2000 in Cleveland, Ohio. The conference grew out of the realisation that many failures could be prevented if there was better communication between those who perform failure analysis and the original designers. Often the engineers who perform failure analysis begin to notice recurring product failures, or gain insight into how a process or material specification could have been improved. The conference bought product designers and materials engineers together to discuss the problems. The nineteen papers were divided into five sessions: the real root cause of failures; design issues; materials issues, and manufacturing issues, fabrication, service and maintenance issues. |
