This book shows how fibres can be used in an increasingly wide and exciting range of industrial applications. Fibres, once only used for clothes and soft furnishings, are now finding roles in medical devices, in aircraft components, and as intelligent sensors. The book begins by looking at the importance of the fibre surface in the traditional textile industry and goes on to consider novel fibres and their applications. A number of chapters are devoted to the ability of the fibres to function in composite materials. There are chapters on: cotton fibres; polyester fibres; the frictional and IR absorption of fibre surfaces; new fibres and their applications; fibres as electrochemical sensors; mineral-filled polypropylene fibres; high-performance ceramic fibres; plasma treatment of fibres; and fibres in composite materials. |
