This book provides a data source and insight into the properties of nematic liquid crystals governing the performance of liquid crystal display devices (LCDs). Display devices based on these crystals are a huge international industry and LCDs are part of the every-day life of many people. The physical properties of nematic liquid crystals determine the detailed operation of the various modes. The success of LCD technology depends on a knowledge of these properties, of how they are related to their chemical composition and how they influence the device performance. Contributions cover molecular structure and properties; thermodynamics; elastic, electric, magnetic and optical properties; elastic and viscous properties; theories and computer modelling. |
