Review: In the early 1980s the author sought out and restored the Phonovision discs; produced by John Logie Baird's experiments with video recording on gramophone discs. As a result of the recent restoration of a few surviving examples of Phonovision, we can now see exactly what Baird saw - recordings made in the 1930s. The discovery and restoration of these television images is described here in detail. The author explains how the video recordings could be made 25 years before it was previously thought possible, why they have been lost all this time, what type of television programme people recorded, and what the BBC were doing with the television service in 1932, four years before television was supposed to have started. The moving images of BBC 30-line broadcast television challenge the view that broadcasts were poor and the performers amateurish.
