The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and their physical, chemical and biological properties form the basis of essential controls that facilitate life. Global climate change, pollution of the oceans, falling fish stocks, and the recovery of organic and inorganic chemicals and pharmaceuticals from the oceans all call for deeper understanding of this complex medium. In this book marine scientists and technologists look at some issues of major environmental impact: the oceans and climate; the use of U-Th series radionuclides and transient tracers in oceanography; pharmaceuticals from the sea; and contaminants and pollution in the marine environment. |
