Review: This book gives a survey of all the applications and techniques needed to use earth as a building material. It describes the actual composition of earth, and its reaction to different conditions such as heat, stress and water etc. It explains how to improve the earth's characteristics by special treatments, or using additives. It describes methods of construction such as rammed earthwork, workblock work, using wet loam, plastering, providing weather protection, and protection against flooding. The design of particular building elements, such as floors, walls, domes, etc. are all shown in detail. The last chapter gives particular case studies of buildings in Germany, India, Switzerland, the USA, Sweden, Mali and Morocco.
