Review: These are the proceedings of the 25th International Air Transportation Conference held in Texas in June 1998; they discuss airport planning and engineering for the next century. A secondary theme, 'Base conversions and airport upgrades are the airport facilities of the next century', addresses issues concerning military base closures throughout the world. The book includes developmental track presentations from Dallas/Ft Worth, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles Airports, and Metropolitan Washington Airports and is largely devoted to the transformation of Bergstrom Air Force Base to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Details of the full conversion are given, including the planning process, demolition, environmental clean-up, design and construction. Other sections cover broad interest subjects such as innovation in airfield pavements, environmental actions, operations and planning and landslide developments. Chapters include: Planning for the next century; Austin-Bergstrom International base conversions; airport development; pavement materials; pavement design and analysis; and pavement construction and rehabilitation.
