Review: These are the proceedings of the conference held in Aspen in March 1999. The aim of the conference was to promote interdisciplinary understanding of aerospace systems, their underlying science and technology, and their applications to government and commercial endeavours. The papers were divided into eight subject areas. '21st century mission and design operations', which includes 2nd generation, faster, better, cheaper missions in the 21st century. 'Aerospace technologies', which includes: optical sensors; spacecraft thermal management; space systems guidance, navigation and control; smart structures and materials; electronics packaging; digital processing, and reconfigurable hardware. 'Air and space systems', which includes: GPS applications; aircraft flight testing, and advanced diagnostics. 'Antennas and radar', which includes: high altitude SAR imaging, and smart antennas. 'Remote sensing/Opto-electronics', which includes: computer vision and image processing; space interferometry; advanced IR sensors; remote sensing, and target-tracking applications. 'Software and computing for aerospace', which includes: modelling and simulation; neural networks, and real-time fault-tolerant computing systems. 'Communications', which includes: networking, data communications and wireless. 'System engineering', which includes: space multidisciplinary design processes; new technologies; and common tools and methodologies Finally, 'Innovations in aerospace education', which comprises three case studies.
