These are the papers from the conference in Italy in September 1999. The aim of the conference was to encourage international cooperation among scientists, technologists and engineers and to assist in a better understanding of areas such as fatigue, fracture and wear resistance. Surface treatment can be used to reduce the cost of components, extend the life of structural elements and increase the load-carrying capacity for the same life. The book is divided into seven sections, covering the different approaches to the topic. The sections include: Surface coating; Residual stress effects; Electrical and electrochemical processes; Corrosion and stress corrosion; Laser surface treatment; Shot peening; and Rolling, grinding, polishing and metal work |
