Review: These are the proceedings of the three-day conference held in Illinois in October 1998. The 72 papers cover a broad spectrum of topics and were divide into 13 sessions. The plenary session discussed nanostructured ceramic coatings. The next session, 'Physical vapor deposition', included papers on current trends in CVD and PVD functional hard coatings,studies of PVD TiN coated tool steel and cathodic arc ion sources for implantation processing. The largest session, Characterization, included 11 papers.
