This book is the first in the field of machining of abrasive ceramic materials and aims to give a better understanding of ceramic materials, machining processes and their applications. The book begins by discussing the properties of ceramics, with emphasis on wear mechanism, selection criteria, microstructure reinforcement of ceramics, and fundamental properties. This is followed by an introduction to the basics of deformation and fracture mechanics, crack initiation and propagation and indentation processes. A chapter giving a general view of the abrasive processes is followed by chapters on the grinding process and two abrasive processes: honing and superfinishing of ceramic materials. The final chapter is dedicated to loose abrasive processes: lapping and polishing. The chapters are written by contributors with experience in the field from the USA, Germany, Japan and the UK. |
