Review: These are the Proceedings of the International Symposium on the Electron, held at Churchill College Cambridge, in September 1997, to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of the electron by J. J. Thomson. Together these papers provide an overview of historical developments resulting from the discovery of the electron, give a survey of the current state of knowledge and look to the future. The book includes discussion of the electron as a fundamental particle through electrons in materials science, physics, chemistry and biology. Papers cover the electron structure of solids, microelectronics and solid state devices, electron microscopy and holography, elementary particle physics, superconductivity, catalysis and nanostructures and solutions to the phase problem. The book is aimed at students and research scientists in physics, materials science, engineering, chemistry, biology and the history of science.
