On the morning of January 10, 1901 the Lucas gusher, near Beaumont, Texas, the first great American gusher, spouted oil 100ft over the top of the derrick on the top of the hummock that the world was to know as Spindletop. This is the story of the oil discovery that changed the world. It started the liquid fuel age - leading to automobiles, airoplanes. highways, railroads and marine transport. It heralded a new industry and the most magnificent boom ever experienced. There were no precedents for coping with the fabulous financial boom, the geological phenomenon, the technological problems, the scientific challenges and the tests of human endurance and resourcefulness. The authors describe the discovery of oil, the boom and the men who moulded the birth of the oil industry. |
